Laser Treatment for Facial Veins and Birthmarks - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What causes these veins to appear on my face?

  • They appear with age in most white people, typically in areas of sun exposure. Heredity is a factor. Sun protection for the face and neck are helpful.

Q. What is rosacea?

  • This is a condition that is not well understood, characterized by redness and textural changes to the skin of the face, usually over the nose and cheeks. Bill Clinton has this condition. Although the cause is not known, it helps to treat the affected superficial veins with the laser to reduce the degree of blush.

Q. What causes this redness of my neck?

  • Poikiloderma of Civatte is a common skin condition in white women over forty. Sun exposure is believed to be a factor. Laser and IPL treatments have been used with modest results. Repeated treatments are needed.

Q. What is the difference between the pulsed dye laser and IPL?

  • Laser treatments deliver energy on one wavelength. Intense pulsed light systems use filters on a flashlamp to produce a range of wavelengths. If a specific target – spider veins - is to be treated, it makes sense to use a laser system to maximize results. If a range of targets, for example both hemoglobin and melanin (mild reddening and brown blotching), are to be treated, an IPL system can help.
  • The IPL systems do not produce the bruising that accompany pulsed dye laser treatments and have some lightening effect on areas of brown discoloration, but the results are of a more incremental nature and a course of 6 treatments is usually recommended. Both pulsed dye lasers and IPL systems have been used to treat facial wrinkles with minimal effectiveness. Ablative lasers are best for wrinkles.

Q. When can I return to work?

  • There are round purple bruises immediately after treatment and these last up to 10 days. Women can partially conceal them with makeup. Most patients take at least a few days off work.

Q. Can laser vein treatment be done the same time as laser resurfacing?

  • Yes, I commonly treat spider veins with the pulsed dye laser, followed by laser resurfacing. This way there is only one recovery time.
