Hyperpigmentation (skin darkening)
May occur in rare cases and is treated with strict avoidance of UV exposure. Sunblock is mandatory. A bleaching cream may also be recommended to help the affected area(s) fade; this process may take several months.
Hypopigmentation (skin lightening)
Tends to be more obvious in patients with darker coloring. This problem is avoided by using lower energy settings when treating patients with darker complexions.
Blistering
Blisters occasionally occur in patients with darker skin types or tanned patients because more energy is absorbed by the skin. Sometimes, darker areas, such as a mole, may blister if they are in the treatment area. Usually the skin heals and there is little, if any, residual effect. The patient simply keeps the area clean and applies topical antibiotic ointment (Neosporin).
Scarring
With typical energy settings, scarring is unlikely.
