It almost goes without saying that a youthful or fit appearance offers a professional advantage. Numerous studies have established that good-looking and youthful people have a step up on the rest of us. Is it any surprise that almost every news anchor, particularly women, on cable news channels is physically attractive and has a youthful appearance?
One of my patients, a 54 year-old female telecommunications executive,
told me "I work in a youth oriented business. Heck, I'm older than the chief executive. I don’t want people to think I'm over the hill." Another facelift patient thanked me for giving her another ten years in the work force.
Is it fair that society treats older people or, perhaps more accurately, older-looking people differently? Of course not! But society's judgment is a reality. People expect you to make the most of what you have. Just as you would hone your skills, honing your appearance is expected. Those who do it well get credit for it
and reap the rewards.
