Male Breast Reduction - What To Expect
After Surgery
Men need to know that the improvement is about 50% after liposuction alone. There is still breast tissue left behind. Sometimes patients return for subcutaneous mastectomies if they want a more dramatic reduction, essentially a flat chest. The excisional surgery allows complete removal of excess fat and breast tissue.
Liposuction is not especially painful. Expect some degree of bruising and swelling, usually around the sides of the chest (the blood tracks around the sides due to gravity).
When breast tissue is cut out, a drain is used. The drain is left in for three to four days. There is usually minimal discomfort. In fact, the chest is numb at first. It takes a few months for the feeling to return to normal.
The scars from liposuction are small, one on each side, located in the natural ("inframammary") crease under the breast.
When breast tissue is directly excised (subcutaneous mastectomies), an incision is used along the lower border of the areola, leaving a scar that tends to be well-concealed along this natural border.
The small liposuction incisions are closed with absorbable sutures. Usually a nonabsorbable suture is used along the areolar border (when this approach is used), and removed one week later in the office.
