"When I was in the fifth grade, my art teacher drew a sketch of my face and all I recognized was my big nose. It was the only thing I would see when I looked in the mirror. Whenever I met someone, the first thing I looked at was their nose. I wouldn’t wear hats or push my hair away from my face. I always had everything coming forward, hoping it would draw attention away from my nose. I would wear lots of makeup, thinking people would look at my lips or eyes or all the hair around my face and not notice my nose. I didn’t even want my husband to look at me sideways. I had to wait until I was 21 before I could afford to do anything about it. I won’t lie and say it didn’t hurt during recovery, because it did. I had swelling and bruising.
