"I wanted to pick up my sprits. I’d lost my best friend to breast cancer and I wasn’t getting along in my marriage. I came to the realization that I may be in the workplace for the foreseeable future. So this was an investment in myself. Being in sales, I wanted to project my best image. I am not naïve enough to believe that appearance is not important. Today it is a necessity for a women. This double standard is a reality that you may as well accept.

When I got home, my son joked “I’m a human being!” like I was the elephant man or something. I didn’t have pain really. But it was the most discomfort I have ever had. I know that is an odd distinction but anyone who has had a facelift knows what I mean. After healing, I was almost giddy with excitement. I liked the compliments I got, and continue to receive almost five years later. A girlfriend and I looked at pictures of us years ago and she said “I can’t believe how bad you looked!”. She felt bad right after saying this but I didn’t mind. I did look hideous. But I look a lot better now, and I’m same person. Really, there was no negative side. I did not encounter jealousy. My kids, now ages 30 and 24, love it.

I have to confess that my reasons were not entirely within – there was some external influence in doing this. Maybe it was 50% for work reasons and 50% for me personally.

"I was beginning to look older than I felt. I felt thirty inside but the years were showing on me. I wanted to do something about that. A couple of friends of mine had work done. A friend of mine had laser work and her skin was really beautiful. I was going to do just the laser but I also had a saggy chin and saggy eyelids. I decided to get it all done and recover all at once. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

My fear was that if anything went wrong, I could be disfigured for life. My daughter was getting married in four months and I wanted to look my very best for her wedding, but there was that fear...Things can go wrong. Actually, I did have a complication. My left eye wouldn't close all the way and my left cheek was tight and my smile wasn't normal. Dr. Swanson assured me both would correct themselves and they did.

When I see people I haven't seen in awhile, they say things like, "you look so rested. Have you lost weight? I was at the doctor with my 23 year-old daughter-in-law and the nurse asked if I was her sister. Unsolicited compliments are such a pleasure. My daughter opposed me doing this and I told her I needed her love and support. She saw me at some of the worst stages. Now she says, "I'm really glad you had it done, Mom. You look beautiful."

My husband was very supportive and that's important. When you come out of surgery, you are swollen and do not look like yourself. It can be frightening. I know it was normal and I knew my husband loved me anyway. My eyes swelled shut and I couldn't see anything. That lasted a day and a half. The swelling was very uncomfortable. I felt like I had a wrap on my face when I didn't. The laser portion began to scab over and I was swollen. I took about ten showers a day and that made my skin feel a lot better. I learned to put a washcloth over my face and let the water roll over it. That was very soothing. You're more tired than you think you'll be. This is surgery, after all. I did what I was supposed to do and drank a lot of fluids and ate healthy meals. I had a lot of support from my husband and friends, which made the healing process a lot easier.

“I was widowed years ago, but the last few years I’ve had a special gentleman friend. After he died last year, I was feeling very low. I decided if I could look younger, maybe I would feel younger and get interested in things again. I had my laser treatment and facelift shortly after my 74^th birthday and when recovered I didn’t even look 60. In fact, I went to the senior citizen center to sign up for a swimming class and was told I wasn’t old enough. That really made my day.

"I was 77 when my husband read me an article in the Wall Street Journal about advances in laser surgery. He suggested it might be something for me to try. I’ve always been an outdoors woman, riding horseback, playing golf, and spending time in the sun. I had lots of wrinkles and age spots. I was certainly interested in looking better, but I worried I was too old. Could anything be done with my skin? I sought out an expert surgeon and learned that in addition to laser surgery for my skin, I could have improvement in my eyes and face. I decided to have it all.

The first two days after surgery, I thought I’d made a dreadful mistake. I needed care. Those first two weeks, I didn’t let anyone see me except for my husband and son. Two weeks later, even though I still had some swelling, I put on makeup and went to play bridge at the club. That was trail by fire. My bridge foursome knew I was having cosmetic surgery, and they were waiting for me. Well, every one of them was pleased for me. Then the ladies at all the other tables paraded by to get a close-up. I was flooded with compliments. It was fun.

I was worried about seeing my daughter for the first time. You know how critical daughters can be of their mothers. I was afraid she would think I was vain and foolish.

Instead, she was proud of me. She just loved the results. My five year-old granddaughter said, “Grandma, when you were here a year ago, you were old. Now you’re young, but your hands are old”. Unfortunately, nothing can be done about that. I’m 78 now, and I think I’m testimony that you’re never too old to do this.”

"I'm 62 and wasn't sure a facelift could do much for me. I never minded getting lines around my eyes, but they had turned into deep wrinkles, and when I looked in the mirror, that's all I saw.
