Many people have unwanted extra fat below the chin.  Often they are aware of this from a young age, even early adulthood.  It is an inherited condition which obscures the profile of the jaw line and detracts from one’s appearance.  It is reduced but not corrected by weight loss.  I have had many very lean patients who appear heavier because of this double chin.  Think of movie stars and celebrities that we regard as attractive (Michelle Pfeiffer, Rob Lowe).  They usually have a clean, well-defined jaw line. Fortunately the procedure to correct this problem is straightforward.  It involves an incision just under the chin (often there is a skin crease or old scar here).  Liposuction is performed using a narrow cannula to remove extra fat.  The muscle is then repaired in the midline through the same incision.  This also treats prominent muscle bands in the neck and helps to treat or avoid the “turkey waddle” deformity in later years.

Because of its predictability and relative ease, this is a very popular operation in men and women, old and young.  I usually do it when I perform a facelift.  If there is loose skin of the jowls and neck, a facelift is recommended.

CHIN AND JOWL AUGMENTATION

Sometimes a chin implant is used simultaneously in patients who have a “weak chin”.  A jowl implant may be used to help define the jawline on the sides.  This improves facial balance.  The implant is inserted through the same incision and feels completely natural.  Go to Patient Photos
