A breast reduction can be every bit as satisfying for the overly-endowed woman as an augmentation is for a flat-chested woman, and it is one of life’s ironies that some women have too much while others have too little.

Added to the psychological impact of very large breasts are the physical effects - back, neck and shoulder discomfort, furrowing of the bra straps, heat rashes under the breasts, and difficulty with exercising.

Fortunately, the breast reduction procedure can relieve these problems, and this procedure is extremely satisfying for both the patient and the plastic surgeon.

Like the breast lift procedure described in that section, the scars are the “trade-off”.  However, the balance is virtually always a very positive one.  The scars are hidden and improve with time.  The nipple looks as though it is separated but it stays attached - the surrounding skin is trimmed away along with the extra breast tissue.

It is not unusual for the day of surgery to be an important one is patient's lives - they tend to think of their lives before and after this procedure because of its impact in terms of quality of life.

Reductions are also performed in men who develop excess breast tissue although these usually involve smaller incisions.
