As we age we develop wrinkles
and we gradually lose facial fat. This fat atrophy is part of the
aging process. Fat injection has been used for years, but the
problem has always been absorption of the injected fat. Patients
might look good for a short time, but after that, the benefit was lost.
What surgeons did not appreciate was that in the process of harvesting the fat from one part of the body and injecting it into another (the face), the fat cells were badly traumatized as they were harshly suctioned from the body and injected under pressure through tiny needles.
Using a technique described by Dr. Sidney Coleman, the fat is "harvested" from another area of the body, such as the hips, separated from the fluid component, and then very carefully and gently placed into areas of fat deficiency such as the lips or the cheeks.
Before long, this technique caught on. It has several advantages:
1. It's you own tissue (it's safe).
2. It feels natural.
3. Some of it survives indefinitely.
4. No one minds losing a little fat from the hips or the thighs.
Now fat injection is one of the most popular procedures we perform,
often at the time of other facial procedures.
